时事精读|总裁、逆袭、赘婿,土味短剧为何让人上头?

国内各大社交媒体近几年刮起了一阵短剧风潮，在国外也颇有名气（点击这里查看「美国的霸总短剧」）。

自然，这些被誉为「电子榨菜」的爽剧也引起了英文媒体的关注，今天我们就来读一篇相关报道，学习下用英文如何介绍「霸总」、「赘婿」这些爽剧必备题材，看看在老外眼中，爆火短剧为何让人上头。

Micro dramas, taking China by storm and also gaining traction overseas, are basically super short streaming series, with each episode usually lasting no more than two minutes.

In works targeted at female audiences, the most common words revolve around (romantic) relationships, such as “madam” (夫人) and “CEO” (总裁). Unlike Chinese internet novels from over a decade ago, which often depicted perfect love and luxurious lifestyles, these short dramas offer a different perspective on married life and self-discovery. Many of these dramas focus on how the female protagonist builds a better life after divorce and successfully stands up to her ex-husband or to those who once underestimated her — both physically and emotionally.

In male-oriented short dramas, the pursuit of power is a common theme, with phrases like “the strongest in history” (史上最强) and “war god” (战神) frequently mentioned. Another surprising theme is “matrilocal son” (赘婿), the son-in-law who lives with his wife’s family. In China, this term is derogatory, particularly referring to husbands with lower economic income and social status than their wives, which is considered embarrassing in traditional Chinese views. However, in these short dramas, the matrilocal son will employ various methods to earn the respect of his wife’s family and achieve significant success.

Although storylines differ, a recurring theme in these short dramas is protagonists wanting to turn their lives around. This desire for transformation is portrayed from various perspectives, whether it’s from the viewpoint of a wealthy, elite individual or from those with lower social status. This “feel-good” sentiment appears to resonate with many Chinese viewers.

▼ revolve around 讲述，围绕……为主题

revolve本义有「（使）旋转」，常用作revolve around sth.「绕着……旋转」。在该词义基础上，revolve又引申出了「围绕……，以……中心」这一含义。

具体到本文，revolve around的主语是the most common words「最常见的词」，所谓最常见的词「以……为中心」，其实就是说这些词都「和……主题相关」。

The argument revolved around costs.

▼ protagonist n. 主人公

六级词汇prototype「原型」中包含了希腊语词根proto-「第一次」，因此和proto-相关的词大都和「第一」有关。

比如prototype，相当于proto-「第一」和type「型号」，所以是「原型」；又如，protagonist出自古希腊戏剧，本意是「重要性排第一的角色」，所以就演变出了「主角」的意思。

▼ stand up to sth. （勇敢）反对、抵抗（不公平的对待）

stand up是「站起身」，而to sth.可以理解为面对的对象（比如react to sth.「面对某事作出回应」），所以stand up to sth.从字面即可理解为「站起身来直面某事」，脑海中是不是很容易想象出受到不公待遇后「奋起反抗」的样子？由此可以记忆该短语的含义。

He’ll respect you more if you stand up to him.

如果你敢于抗拒，他会更尊重你。

▼ underestimate vt. 低估，轻视

under-「在……之下」和over-「在……之上」是对互为反义的前缀，给同一个词加上这两个不同的词缀后，往往会出现两个互为反义的单词。

比如estimate是「估计」，所以underestimate就是「低估」，overestimate就是「高估」；同理，undercooked是「未煮熟的」，overcooked就是「煮糊了」；underpriced是「定价过低的」，overpriced就是「过于昂贵的」。

▼ -oriented 以……为方向的；面向……的

从词源来说，orient的含义是「升起」，由于日出东方在世界各地都成立，所以orient被赋予了「太阳升起的地方」的含义，the Orient就是「东方」，用于指代东亚各国。

阿加莎·克里斯蒂的著名小说《东方快车谋杀案》中提到的Orient Express「东方快车」就是一列从巴黎由西向东开往伊斯坦布尔的火车。

变成动词后，orient依然与「东方」有关，意为「调整（某物的）方向以朝向东方」，进而抽象为「以……为方向」，而且不再局限于地理语境，还可以指「以某个群体、事物为方向、为重点」，比如：

a course that is oriented towards the needs of businessmen

文中出现的-oriented则是orient动词含义的派生结构，在前面加上名词，即可表示「面向……的」，比如profit-oriented「以营利为方向的」（即「以营利为目标的」）、market-oriented「以市场为目标的」以及本文的male-oriented「以男性为受众的」，与前一段的targeted at female audiences「针对女性受众的」相呼应。

▼ matrilocal adj. 入赘的

matr-是「母亲」的词根，所以maternity就是「孕妇的」（maternity leave「产假」）、maternal就是「母系的」（maternal grandfather「外祖父」，即母亲那边的grandfather）。

因此matrilocal实际上就是matri-「母亲」+local「当地的」，也就是「成为母系当地的」或「婚后到妻子的社区去生活的」，用我们中文的说法就是「入赘的」或「居住在女方的」。

近义词还包括disparaging和pejorative，都是正式的用词：

他们的谈话包含了一些带有种族偏见的侮辱性言论。

▼ employ vt. 运用，使用

追根溯源，employ最早的含义就是「使用」，所以才衍生出「雇佣」这个含义（可以把雇佣理解为「花钱来使用」某个员工）。

因此，employer就是「使用员工的人」，即「雇主」，employee就是「被使用的员工」，即「雇员」（-ee表示动作承受者，比如payee「收款人」、trainee「被训练的人」）。

要注意，employ用作「使用」这个含义时颇为正式，非正式语境下用use a method「使用某个方法」即可。

▼ recurring adj. 反复出现的

recurring源自动词recur，即表「重复」的前缀re-加上cur。

cur是什么意思呢？搜索一下大脑，是不是很容易把cur-和current联系起来？current来自于拉丁语的「流动」，在英语里，自然也有了「水流、电流、流通的」等含义。所以recur的字面意思就是「往回流动」，也就衍生出了「重复出现」。

本文的recurring修饰theme「主题」，即「反复出现的主题」。

▼ turn sth. around 扭转；使……有好转

非常形象的短语。想象一下，如果当某件事形势不太好，一路向不好的方向狂奔时，如果能turn it around，让它「调转方向」，是不是可以让形势回到之前（较好的）水平？

因此，turn sth. around就是「扭转」或「使某事有好转」，比如：

At Rockwell International he had turned around a badly performing division.

在洛克威尔国际有限公司，他使一个业绩糟糕的部门有了起色。

类似的表达还有turn sth. upside down，字面意思是「把某事完全颠倒了过来」，也就是「彻底改变某事」：

New approaches to marketing turn old practices upside down.

新的营销方式彻底改变了以前的做法。

▼ resonate with sth. 与某事共鸣

son-是「声」的拉丁词根，因此和「声」有关的英文单词大都含有son-，比如supersonic「超音速的」和形近的sound「声音」。

如何记忆resonate呢？我们拆成三部分来看。

结尾部分的-ate是动词尾缀，标记单词的动词词性（比如activate「激活」），开头的前缀re-则是「重复」（比如前文的recurring「反复出现的」）；而中间的son-是「声」，所以resonate的字面意思就是「反复发出声音」，也就是「发出回声、回响」，进而衍生出了「产生共鸣」的引申义。

These issues resonated with the voters.
